If change is the natural order of things, why do we struggle with the huge milestones in our lives?

At a time when even the most certain things feel disrupted, acclaimed psychotherapist Julia Samuel provides an antidote to the chaos we are all feeling。 In this Sunday Times bestseller, Julia draws on hours of conversations with her patients to show how we can learn to adapt and even thrive during our most difficult and transformative experiences。

From a new mother struggling with the decision to return to work, to a father handling a serious medical diagnosis, from a woman deciding whether to leave her husband for a younger lover, to a man struggling to repair his marriage after the trauma of suffering with COVID-19 in the ICU, this book unflinchingly deals with the hard times in family, love, work, health and identity。

Illuminated by the latest social and psychological research, these 19 powerful, unforgettable and deeply intimate stories about everyday people will inform our understanding of our own unique response to change and improve the way we approach challenges at every stage of life。

I like nostalgia but this was too depressing even for me。 Too little optimism thru the clouds。

I bought this on audio book and I would like Julia Samuel to read to me everything I ever read again as her voice is soSoothing!! That aside, it was such an amazing insight into different challenges presented in life to different individuals from various backgrounds。 I love Samuel’s commitment to conveying her own struggles and difficulties with certain patients and different perspectives of trying to understand them。

I loved reading this book! There were moments of pain, tears, hope, and laughter。 A book that will help you navigate change and loss。 I found it reassuring to read all these stories of how these people experienced challenging situations because it reminded me that we all suffer, and it inspired me to take action。 Julia Samuel shares a lot of herself and of the patterns she has noticed throughout her career as a therapist。

Wow, just wow。 One of the best book in this category that I have read, and that says a lot。The only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is that there is just a little too much theorizing to my taste, I don't need to read about all the theories behind or the author's reflections over her clients' problems, I just want the case stories without the filling! Maybe You Should Talk to Someone is 100 x better。

A strong start to a book that I felt held a lot of promise and words of wisdom; however, by the last section on identity, it became clear that the author has drunk deeply from the poisoned chalice of identity politics and intersectional feminism which rather spoiled the book for me。 Not to mention a lot of the case studies were very hard to relate to, as someone who has gone through a lot, I would swap some of my problems for the ones I was reading about, put it that way。 I found the 8 pillars o A strong start to a book that I felt held a lot of promise and words of wisdom; however, by the last section on identity, it became clear that the author has drunk deeply from the poisoned chalice of identity politics and intersectional feminism which rather spoiled the book for me。 Not to mention a lot of the case studies were very hard to relate to, as someone who has gone through a lot, I would swap some of my problems for the ones I was reading about, put it that way。 I found the 8 pillars of strength very useful though, unfortunately due to my unique lens and way of the viewing the world, I did not get much out of this book。 。。。more

I discovered Julia Samuel through the podcast How to Fail by Elizabeth Day。 Everybody should have access to a copy during difficult times。 A collection of themes: changes, crisis, hopeful beginnings brought alive by patient cases。 This book offers an insight into a therapist workings during therapy sessions。 This is not merely another 'self help' book。 I discovered Julia Samuel through the podcast How to Fail by Elizabeth Day。 Everybody should have access to a copy during difficult times。 A collection of themes: changes, crisis, hopeful beginnings brought alive by patient cases。 This book offers an insight into a therapist workings during therapy sessions。 This is not merely another 'self help' book。 。。。more

Fascinating insight into the work of a psychotherapist。 I was invested in her patients and learned a lot from their journeys

I listened to the audio of this and actually lowkey heartbroken it’s over。 One of my favourites of the year。 Packed with so much humanity as well as straight up facts and practical ways of dealing with change。 A title I would recommend highly。 A truly well rounded and honest read。 So, so raw and human。 I loved it。

I have been given a copy of this book by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。I felt this was a good insight to the therapists room。 It showed the thoughts and feelings of clients as well as the thought process of the author/psychotherapist。 I enjoyed seeing what the different clients were struggling with and if/how the solved the struggles。 However I got slightly bored at the over analysis。 The multiple sections of conclusion and analysis were repetitive and to some extent, unnecessary。 T I have been given a copy of this book by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。I felt this was a good insight to the therapists room。 It showed the thoughts and feelings of clients as well as the thought process of the author/psychotherapist。 I enjoyed seeing what the different clients were struggling with and if/how the solved the struggles。 However I got slightly bored at the over analysis。 The multiple sections of conclusion and analysis were repetitive and to some extent, unnecessary。 There are bits I will take from this book but it isn't one I would recommend to a friend。 。。。more

I really love the cover of this book, it is gorgeous。 This was a book I received from @netgalley and one that I probably wouldn't have picked up in a shop but that I actually really enjoyed。I'm really into psychology and the relationships people have with themselves and this was an exploration into different aspects of peoples lives and I loved it! I expected to relate more to this book that I did。That said, it was nicely written and full of interesting people who formed Samuels case load。

I’ve loved this。 I seem drawn to these types of books when I need to find answers for things in myself and that’s exactly what this did。

Pat Morris-jones

I usually avoid books about work related subjects like the plague。 However this was interesting and taught me a few things that were useful。 The fertile void is a great idea。 I found her summaries a bit twee and her gut feelings a little concerning。 However, despite this, a good book。

Elaine Ellis

Inspiring I found this book inspirational as Julia retells stories of people she’s worked with who have, in one degree or another, transitioned or come to terms with changes in their life。 I especially found Julia’s explanations at the end of each chapter very helpful。

Really enjoyed this

as social media continue to portray an unrealistic image of life, this book provides a necessary reminder of what it actually is: complicated and messy, challenging and painful, but also joyful and full of love, if you are willing to make an effort。 a definite must-read!

Jenny

An interesting set of therapist-client exchanges on the subject of change of various kinds (divorce, coming out, starting a new job, the menopause, etc。。。)。 Thoughtful and compassionate。

Anja

Interesting theme but I did not like the writing style / general approach, so I put the book aside after a few chapters。

Mary

Fascinating case studies and a helpful book for understanding how change affects us and how to accept and navigate it。

I picked this up because she fascinated me on Esther Perel's Sessions, but that was a discussion for clinicians and this was for a more general audience。 I found it a little too basic。 But it's great if you want a very broad (like, very very broad) overview of life transitions and how they can be explored in therapy。 I picked this up because she fascinated me on Esther Perel's Sessions, but that was a discussion for clinicians and this was for a more general audience。 I found it a little too basic。 But it's great if you want a very broad (like, very very broad) overview of life transitions and how they can be explored in therapy。 。。。more

I read a review of this title in the Guardian which prompted me to request it。 It's such a quiet and unassuming blueprint for navigating difficult experiences that it would be easy to underestimate the science and good sense which underpins the whole book。 Highly recommended for these crazy times。 I read a review of this title in the Guardian which prompted me to request it。 It's such a quiet and unassuming blueprint for navigating difficult experiences that it would be easy to underestimate the science and good sense which underpins the whole book。 Highly recommended for these crazy times。 。。。more

Amazing work by Julia, original and eye opening about the human condition。 I highly recommend。

Julia Samuel’s new book is so wonderful。 It addresses many issues that we all have or will face in our lives and through her case studies gives us tool to address them。 Her style is so easy to read and it feels like she is talking to us。 She writes with real empathy but also honesty about her own thoughts and feelings which makes the book all the more relatable。 I think I have highlighted more part of this book that I haven’t!

Rosie McKerr

This is such a fantastic book。 Very moving, the stories give such insight into the human condition。 The chapters at the end with the 8 pillars of strength and life tasks are so useful as well。

Katherine Burr

Inclusive, daring and raw。 Julia offers a comfort and reassurance that this too shall pass, very fitting for present climate。 I love this author。

An intimate, accessible and often emotional insight in the case notes of the practitioner of person centred counselling。 Julia Samuel adeptly conveys the reflecting back of what has been communicated from her clients demeanour and body language and much as from what they say which lends completeness to what she is saying。 I also really appreciated her ability to convey her own internal thoughts and responses as it layered authenticity in to the narrative。 I've already recommended this to my frie An intimate, accessible and often emotional insight in the case notes of the practitioner of person centred counselling。 Julia Samuel adeptly conveys the reflecting back of what has been communicated from her clients demeanour and body language and much as from what they say which lends completeness to what she is saying。 I also really appreciated her ability to convey her own internal thoughts and responses as it layered authenticity in to the narrative。 I've already recommended this to my friend - and she's already bought, read and appreciated it! 。。。more

A really beautiful book documenting change in others lives, to help understand and come to terms with the beauty of change in our own lives。 One I'd recommend to everyone so that they can understand that change is nothing to be feared and is in fact good。 A really beautiful book documenting change in others lives, to help understand and come to terms with the beauty of change in our own lives。 One I'd recommend to everyone so that they can understand that change is nothing to be feared and is in fact good。 。。。more
